We didn’t really talk about the blood. My sheets looked like someone had been murdered, so we threw them out, showered off the mess—we looked like someone had been murdered—and slept like goddamn angels, wrapped around each other in his room. The next day was all smirking and contentedness, but he’d look at my lips and lick his, and I knew he wasn’t just thinking of the way I kissed (though at least I finally understood what he meant about liking it enough to want to change me). And if I looked like I wanted to eat him alive, it didn’t have anything to do with sex.

I mean yeah, who wouldn’t have a huge head over Gianni wanting his dick? But that wasn’t the whole obsession. Not by a long shot.

The memory was slippery, that flash of silver on my tongue. Everything else in perfect detail, every unexpectedly violent moment of it, so different from anything else I’d ever done— ever been. The thing I was most interested in fluttered, like something made of smoke. I couldn’t pin it down.

Obsession didn’t even cover it. At the same time, I became increasingly aware with each glance that passed between us that we might’ve done something wrong. It wasn’t enough to hurt us, Giuseppe had said something about it having to be overwhelming, but—

Instinct had clearly driven us to it, purely animal; there was no control involved. Seemed like that was becoming a recurring theme in my life, or undeath, anyhow. I was supposed to be superhuman, not subhuman.

Gianni obviously welcomed it, that black undercurrent tying us to each other, the knowledge that we were both perfectly aware of its pull. I couldn’t help loving it, either, on that same basic, instinctive level, the one that wouldn’t let me take my eyes off him when he was in the room. The memory of its physical manifestation forced me to look in the mirror. I’d known it would happen eventually, that I’d just been putting it off because I suspected I wouldn’t like what I saw there.

Sometimes it’s a motherfucker, only being right about the bad things. Two nights after the spectacular bloodfuck, my night to kill again, and it was freezing, the old snow collected in dirty heaps against the curbs and the sidewalks covered in cold, muddy tracks. It used to piss me off, going out to the barn at five a.m. in winter and freezing my ass off, but the vampire resistance to cold had to be one of my favorite perks. What was a little snow when it couldn’t hurt you? I loved the thin air in my lungs and the crystal patterns forming on the old bricks along the alleys.

I wore a new coat, one Gianni had bought. I could still catch the sweet spicy scent of him even though he was a few feet away, walking at my side and looking like a fucking rock star, as usual. His boots didn’t squish like my shoes; they made a clear, hollow sound on the sidewalk.
